Converse Chambray Comes Out to Play (& small giveaway)

**The winner of the Cameo giveaway is Danielle. Congrats, Danielle!**

Thank you everyone for your sweet comments on my last post. I caught Nick checking back a few times (he usually never reads my blog) just to revel in your praise. Today we're back to the self-tripod pics, which will become synonymous with good sports being on TV.

Since being unexpectedly welcomed as a "keeper" last month, this Converse for Target chambray shirt has quickly ascended to MVP status within my wardrobe. The shade is perfect (not too denim-y), the material is comfy, and it is just too easy to pair. I can't think of a single bottom that it doesn't go with. If you don't have a similar shirt in your wardrobe yet...you are missing out!

Necklaces: Layered akoya pearls and cameo (both from ebay)
Cardigan: Martin & Osa sz XS (similar)
Shoes: Aldo sz 36 (too big...need 35) (similar)

The fit of a womens XS right off the rack (see original post here) was passable, but definitely not perfect on me. I thought I shrunk it with a wash & dry, but I was wrong. The material must be pre-shrunk cotton, because it didn't get smaller.
chambrayalter
I wore it to my tailors and ended up getting the torso and sleeves slimmed on the spot for a whopping $15 (almost the price of the shirt!). But I couldn't be happier with the results. The subtle 1 inch slimming on both sides and sleeves makes a world of a difference when the shirt is tucked in (before alterations, it was too poofy for tucking).

Like with any button-up shirt, the key is to make sure the shirt fits with a lil' room to spare at the widest part of your bust. This top looks unflattering on the Target model because it's stretched taught across her chest. Larger chested women should possibly order dress shirts in a size up and then have the sides slimmed and waist nipped in. Nothing looks worse than the buttons right at the chest gaping.

While helping Vicky hunt for her cameo, I ended up with an extra one. Please fill out the short form below if you are interested in winning this vintage green Peri signed cameo. I'll select the winner at random later this week. Giveaway is open internationally : )

On a separate note, Target is having buy one get one 50% off shoes right now. If you were considering the Tawny wedges then this isn't a bad deal. Also I've gotten a few questions about my nude Target Virginia pumps. I really don't recommend them (stiff and uncomfortable), but they've come out with another nude/taupe heel that I haven't tried yet called the Pearce pumps. If you're ordering, don't forget to use the retailmenot $5 coupon and ebates for 3% cash back.

Warm weather, where art thou?

I entered a contest and will find out next week if I made it to the top three. If that happens, by some stroke of luck, I would love to have the votes of you readers and friends. The voting window is short, from 3-6pm, so I will let you guys know if I make it : )

Ping formally requested more casual outfits, so here are some pics from my contest entry. None of these pieces have seen daylight yet (and won't for 3+ more months) because of dreary New England weather:

Top: Forever 21 Woven Striped Shirt sz S (similar)
Shorts: H&M Belted Trouser Shorts sz 2
Necklace: Temple St. Claire for Target (other TSC for Target)
Shoes: Target Tawny Wedges sz 5.5
Polish: Revlon Vixen (love love)

The F21 woven shirt is from this post. I put this in the washer & dryer and ... wowza, wish I took before photos. Size S was super duper loose on me before, and must've shrunk down at least 2 sizes.
F21stripes2
Twitter friends may already know I'm in love with these "UPS brown" high-waisted shorts from H&M. My bf gave a rare thumbs-up and dubbed them my "boy scout shorts." They are a fitted, knit trouser material, and look crisp and tailored. Sz 2 fits snugly on me. They are a recent find and retail for $34.95. Style # 083070 from the "everyday" department.

I decided to keep these brown Tawny Wedges because they are fun and comfortable. However, readers beware...my qualms with the thin wedge heels have proven to be legitimate. Lilly - you poor thing.

Target Review Part II: Chambray Shirt and Tawny Wedges

This chambray shirt is an unexpected "keep" for me. A simple chambray shirt has been on my want list for a while, but was never a priority. I've looked halfheartedly at places like J.Crew (too $$ and big) and H&M (not the right shade), before deciding to give this one a try. This is in womens sizing (not juniors) so it was risky, but I needed a free ship filler : )
chambray1
Jeans: Gap Legging Jeans in 00P, "faded dark" (buy here)
Sandals: Target Tawny Wedges sz 5.5 (buy here)

Worry not - I won't be wearing this farmer-style as shown in the photos. This top will have its glory days paired with colorful skirts and bold jewelry (I'm thinking turquoise or coral) .
chambraychambray2
Material is 100% cotton and I washed & dried it to shrink it a little (photos shown are pre-shrinkage). It's now super soft and comfortable.

Likes:
- subdued color (not too blue-jeans)
- casual fit
- buttons to keep the sleeves rolled up (unrolled, they're a little too long for my short arms)

Dislikes:
- Retail price is a bit steep for Target. With discounts, coupons and ebates I probably got it for about $16, so I shouldn't complain too much.
chambray3
Next up, the Xhilaration Tawny Wedges in sz 5.5. I didn't order these at first, but DSK Steph mentioned that she picked these up in-store and was very pleased with them for the price. I was instantly convinced and ended up getting both colors:
tawny2
The straps, wedges, zipper detail and ankle strap are all very trendy - but I think it works together!
tawny
I like the "pebbled" and "aged" look on the faux-leather and grainy wooden wedges.
tawny3
Likes:
- Very decent quality for the price (got these for about $20ish a pair)
- Pebbled leather looks less "faux" and feels softer than my other Target shoes
- On-trend for Spring/Summer
- Sz 5.5 fits me perfectly
- Very lightweight and comfortable
- Non-slip thin rubber sole. I love that all Target shoes have this. Not sure why most "designer" shoes have that super slipper sole...accident waiting to happen on carpet!

Dislikes:
- THIN wedge heel! Ahh. When I was in high school I had a traumatic (painful both physically and pride-wise) fall down the stairs while tottering in wedges just like these. If you're a good wedge walker this will be no problem, but as soon as I put these on I knew these would be dangerous on uneven Boston sidewalks.
- Some small scuffs on the sole, but for this price I won't complain. It actually adds a little to the aged leather look.
tawny4
Overall, I'm pleased with these (thanks Steph!) and am probably keeping the brown pair, just for fun, even if I'll only wear them cautiously a few times this year. I canceled my orders for the other styles, but a small-footed beauty blogger, Irene, reviewed the Dolce Vita Cork Wedges in sz 5.5 here.

If any of you are ordering clothes from Target, code TC2SAPH2 gives you 15% off clothing and shoes, good until tomorrow - 2/25/2011. Orders over $50 always receive free ship, plus if you Google "Target coupon" you should be able to find a $5 off coupon. There is also 3% cash back through ebates.

Readers - did any of you also order these wedges? Let me know what you think!

Petite Lookbook: Embracing the Lace

My Target order arrived this weekend and I'll be reviewing things slowly. First up is a definite keeper. I wasn't so sure about this affordable lace cardigan at first, but after trying it on with pieces in my closet I fell in love. I first wore it to work over a simple black sheath dress and got numerous compliments. Even my friend who was originally disgusted by my purchase now wants one!
targetlace
Skirt: Banana Republic Paper Bag Skirt sz 0P (similar here in 00)
Belt: BR outlet   Bag: Chanel WOC   Cameo: Peri

The key is to not wear it over a contrasting top a la the hideous Target model pic (but thank you, Target, for the awful photo because that's why this cardigan is now so cheap). I paired this with a simple black cami, a neutral skirt, plus some basic black accessories. If I were to nitpick, I'd complain about the slightly too-long sleeves. However, they are very easy to scrunch up, and I prefer them at the elbow anyways to make the overall look less lacy.

Funny story about this skirt - I was shipping my blog sale items when I noticed one address was 3 blocks away from my apartment! I offered to meet up in person to do the exchange, and she came bearing a gift - a Banana Republic paper bag skirt that she had allegedly outgrown. I have nothing like this skirt and already wore it (and got compliments on it) several times. The belt loops and bunchy nature of the skirt allow me to make the 0P work. Thanks so much, Jenny!!

The silhouette of this skirt resembles the J.crew wool bell skirt(still left in sz 00), so if you ordered this cardigan and own the J.crew skirt, I highly recommend trying the two together : )
targetlace1
Here are photos to show how the cardigan fits. I would not wear it over jeans (much prefer it tucked into skirts and over dresses), but these give you an idea of the longer length and overall snug fit. If you are bigger than me, I'd recommend sizing up to a S as the XS is fitted on me all-around.
targetlace6targetlace4targetlace5
I highly recommend this cardigan to anyone who wants to add something "different" to their wardrobe. The brown did not work out for me, but I can see myself wearing the black with many different ensembles. At just $11.98 (plus other discounts and ebates), this is a welcome addition to my wardrobe.

PS - one new item was added to my blogsale, and prices on other items have been lowered.

Readers - did anyone else pick up this lace cardigan? If so, how are you styling it?

Target Shoe Order Update

The last shoe order I placed from Target turned out to be a big bust. The only pair I kept out of four were the Palani Gladiator Sandals as shown in this post and this post. Here are some quick reviews of the returns (shoes pictured are all sz 5.5):
The good: Looked just like the stock photos, and faux-suede felt similar to real suede (below)
The bad: Sides of the booties were stiff and chafed my ankles, ruffle detail stuck out like a clown collar when worn with black tights.

The good: ...
The bad: Looked like elf shoes. Or little rodents on my feet. Heel was also high (4") and stiff, and my feet kept slipping out the front when I tried to walk in these. Sidenote: wowowow keeping my legs out of the sun for a year has turned me quite ghastly! *shields eyes from blinding paleness*

I was super hopeful about these, but in-person the patent was a lil' too shiny for my liking. I also found the 4" heel and .5" platform to be awkward to walk around in. Bf said they were inappropriate for work, and I couldn't see myself tottering around in 'em on weekends, so returned they were. See the same shoes on Vicky here.

On an unrelated note, here are some pics from earlier that day. We rolled outta bed and went to this little fish taco shop where Nick satiated his San Diego-an cravings. I'm not a big fan of Mexican food, but I already made him eat Asian all week. He jests that we should open up a dim sum & taco truck (seriously no food trucks at all in Boston...lame!).

Petite Fashion Challenge # 2: Wear it now, wear it later

Petite Fashion Challenge #2, hosted by Kelly of AlterationsNeeded (my fave!):

"The challenge: Pick at least one item in your closet (not jeans, that's too easy!), and create two outfits, one for spring/summer, and one for fall/winter."

I sifted through my closet, and quickly decided on an H&M peach tulip skirt. I splurged on it ($40) in the Spring and never wore it again. It's slightly too short/whimsical for a business environment, and too dressy for my weekend lounging.

I took the easy way out and winter-ized this skirt with some black tights, while leaving the rest of the outfit (ruffled top, long cardigan) to mirror how I wore it in the Spring.

Outfit for Fall/Winter:
Skirt: H&M "Trend" sz 4, Blouse: Target sz jrs XS, Cardigan: LOFT sz XXSP (buy here)
pfckelly2

Outfit for Spring/Summer:
Skirt: H&M sz 4, Blouse: Topshop sz 0P, Cardigan: Martin & Osa sz XS
Lookbook26
Wow, makeup and hair looks a little better this time around too. I almost look cross-eyed in the Spring photo; probably not used to being in photographs yet. I would've liked to add some dimension to the Fall/Winter ensemble with a print top, but in the interest of time just threw on hasty black.
Lookbook26bPFCkelly
In winter I tend to "recycle" all my skirts by wearing them over opaque tights. No need to shave, yay. I think that black tights worn with black pumps has a similar elongating effect as bare legs with nude pumps. Black tights also make shorter skirts more work-appropriate because no real "leg" is being revealed. What do you guys think?

Be sure to check out Kelly's post today for links to all the other participating petites : )

To keep or not to keep: H&M Lace Draped Dress

I found a dress at H&M last week that I'm excited to share with you guys (I even have an extra one up for grabs). I would love your opinions on whether or not it's a keeper for the price of $59.95. Sometimes I am deluded into thinking something looks and fits fabulously, but then you guys help me see the light (ie. gap ankle pants, gahh).

This dress is from H&M "Trend." Trend is their more expensive line, distinguishable by more fashion-forward styles and noticeably better workmanship. I adore their styles, but unfortunately, from my experience their trendy stuff is usually cut for taller women (long hemlines, super structured shoulders, over-sized, flowy styles). But this dress - not really trendy, plus I thought it fit great:

Handmdress1
Dress: H&M Trend sz 2 (fits like sz 00 and also comes in black)
Cardigan: Martin & Osa XS (can't wait for my long LOFT cardi's)
Sandals: Mossimo Palani sz 5.5 - love! Buy em HERE
Brooch/pendant: Vintage "Peri" Cameo pin from eBay

Click continue reading for my review...

I became obsessed with brooches and chains after watching Khatu's DIY video. I found this 1960's cameo from eBay. The chain is some cheapy one from A.C. Moore.
Handmdress4
FIT: The bust is a smidge roomy (can accommodate up to a 32B or maybe 34A) but the waist is tiny. The tulip skirt is not too bubbly (see side view), but still gives the illusion of some hips. Measurements of a sz 2: 15" across the underarms, 11.75" across the waist. 33" total length.

QUALITY: As with my other H&M Trend stuff, I am pleased with the quality. The materials are not premium by any means (polyester / viscose / elastane blend) but the details speak for themselves: the gorgeous lace panel that crosses over the shoulders onto the back...the grosgrain ribbon waist...the delicate pleats and draping down the front...the generous pockets...love it all. Plus it's fully lined with a back zipper closure.

VERSATILITY: Not sure what type of occasions I can wear this to. I can see it being nice for a wedding, or on casual occasions with the long cardigan. What do you guys think?

VALUE: One part that is holding me back is the $59.95 price tag. A little much for H&M, but I've paid $40 before for my "Trend" skirts which have held up nicely. I am just biased because H&M stuff is usually so cheap, but if you think about it, dresses from BR and Ann Taylor retail for at least twice as much, plus they don't usually look nor fit too well on tiny petites.
Handmdress2
A note on these Palani gladiator sandals. I love them, but don't expect quality for $25. The materials are all man-made, but the style and fit are perfect for me. They look great with skinny jeans too, and the heel is very comfy. I am going to pick up the same style in black (buy HERE).
Handmdress3

PS - Hautelook (click here if you need an invite) is selling a number of beauty brands this week. Stila is up today, and the smokey eye palette I got last time is there even less this time around for $18 (retail $40). I love this palette and have been wearing it almost every day. It's small and perfect for travel. Here are some crappy swatch photos from my phone:
On Tuesday they are having Lorac. I bought a charcoal eyeshadow from there last time and wore it in this video, but ever since Stila arrived I have been neglecting it. And on Wednesday, they are having NYX cosmetics which is loved by beauty gurus all around. I don't have anything from there so I'm excited to see the offerings.

Readers - I'd love your thoughts on the dress. Would you buy it for $60?

Fall Shoe Order from the Targ

Some say that ankle booties are not for the workplace, but I find that plain black ones look sufficiently professional (especially when worn over black tights). With Target's sale this week, I ordered 2 pairs to try on plus some mary-janes that are a re-run from last Fall (see my post from November 2009):

1. Merona Musetta Ruffled Bootie, $20 (faux-suede) comes in 3 colors, sz 5.5
2.  Merona Reta T-Strap Pumps, $26.40 (real suede) comes in 4 colors. My size sold out in these last year, so I'm ordering early this time around.
3. Mossimo Karensa Shoe Bootie, $24 (real suede) sz 5.5

Online-only deals:
- take 20% off any clothing or shoe purchase over $75, no code needed (ends Saturday)
- take $5 off your order of $50 or more and free ship (click here for the coupon)
- 3% cashback via ebates

These were sold out all summer but I guess they decided to bring 'em back right when summer is over. These are very highly reviewed in both colors so I stalked these waiting for a re-stock.

From my experience, the quality of Target shoes may be hit or miss. Sizing as well - I had to size up to a 6 once in Merona, so I'm worried that a 5.5 in booties may be too small (esp. with socks). Hopefully at least one of the above pairs will be keepers!

PS - one item that I forgot to order with the 20% off is this juniors lace cardigan in Cafe Latte. Yes, it looks repulsive on the Target model, but when Gigi's Gone Shopping modeled it and pointed out how close it was to the Rodarte for Target cardigan (which I adore on Chloe here and here), I saw the potential. Maybe no one else will see the potential and I'll snag it at the end of the season on clearance : )
