Friday's Featured Artist - Aquariann

I don't remember when I first stumbled across Aquariann's shop - but I instantly fell in love! Not only does she do fantasty work, but she uses bright colors that are to die for :) Now to let you get to know her a little bit for yourself...

1. What type of art work do you do?

My style is very inspired by comic books and animation, so I use Pigma Microns by Sakura to line my work and Prismacolor pencils to color it in. Almost every thing I draw has pointy ears or wings or both, so I'm comfortable using the term "fantasy art."

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember, and art just came along for the ride and kind of borrowed the wheel. In elementary school, my friends and I used to make up hordes of characters to write into a young adult series. However, I spent way more time drawing the characters and their situations than actually writing about them - a realization that occurred to me much later. It wasn't until college that it dawned on
me to seriously try drawing - thanks to a new addiction to anime and comic books, the discovery of modern fantasy artists such as Amy Brown and Jessica Galbreth, and many art history classes where I got to drool over the beauty of 10,000 years of work.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I can knit a mean rectangle. Someday I may try to advance my skills past the basic stitch, but right now I'm happy knitting scarves, cozies and arm cuffs. It gives me a reason to continue to buy mounds of pretty yarn I don't need. Plus, it helps me feel more productive instead of simply watching tv.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

Aquariann is a combination of my sun sign and middle name. It's become my sexier, more exciting alter ego.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

That would have to be Mimi Lu, my most recent drawing! (http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=417457) Who couldn't adore her sweet toy poodle face? My friend occasionally brings her over to play at work and I couldn't resist pulling out my wand and turning her into a fairy as a gift. It's the first time I've done a pet portrait, and I hope to do many more - starting with my miniature schnauzer Coca Monsta, as she's already very jealous.

6. Where do you sell your work?

I starting selling online back in 2006, thanks to the wonder that is Etsy. That shop is still open at http://aquariann.etsy.com, but I am currently only listing my most popular items there. All the items I have in stock are now listed in my ArtFire shop at http://aquariann.artfire.com.

7. Do you blog?
Very poorly, at http://aquariann-art.blogspot.com. I have so many ideas for entries, but rarely ever actually sit down to write them. By the time I make it home from my day job as a graphic artist for a newspaper, my brain is zombie mush.

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

Yes! I mostly frequent squidoo (http://squidoo.com/aquariann), facebook (http://facebook.com/aquariannArt) and twitter (http://twitter.com/aquariann), but occasionally can still be found on deviantart (http://aquariann.deviantart.com), flickr (http://flickr.com/photos/aquariann), livejournal (http://aquariann.livejournal.com) and myspace (http://myspace.com/aquariann)

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Ever since I discovered the FUNimation channel, I've been tuning in constantly. It's a 24-hour anime network. How brilliant is that?!

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I have naturally long nails and can bend all the joints in my fingers so it looks like I have witch hands. Freaks my boyfriend out, but it comes in handy during Halloween, my favorite holiday. Yay!

Fall Petite Wear-to-Work - Win a $25 Neiman Marcus Gift Card

***An update to this post can be found HERE***

No one has shared anything yet ... see original post below for details : )
Quick update from my phone: This has been the longest week ever. I feel like all I have done is bitch and moan. I think its allowed every once in a while. But tomorrow is Friday and I will be with my other half for a few days. Its amazing what a hug and a kiss can do. And just being with him makes me forget about all my worries..and most of the time makes me realize that my worries are so small. I truly feel that I am the worlds luckiest girl to have such an amazing man in my life. I can not wait to be his wife.

An Unusual Alteration - Burberry, Part 3 - Black Wool Cashmere Coat

Can you spot the difference between the two pics?

Before --> After

We've all had hems shortened and waists taken in, but what about ... a lapel job? As many petites know, the key to a perfect fit is not just length and width. The key is the proportions. Clearly this rule of thumb was something that I overlooked when I acquired this coat in the cold early months of 2008.

I had been hunting for a basic black wool coat for a while, even before I started working. When I saw this coat, I immediately fell in love with the heavenly soft cashmere blend, the cuffed sleeves, and the waist-cinching self belt. So thus I somehow overlooked the floppy oversized collar. After wearing it just twice, several friends commented on the collar, and I slowly realized myself how silly I looked. To give you an idea of how big it was, the collar measured nearly 18 inches across (my shoulder width is only 14 inches). Thus, the coat was sadly put into storage for a year.

Last month, I randomly thought to take the coat to my tailors to see what they can do. Oh no, they said, this is a HUGE job. The collar and the coat itself was one piece, therefore, in order to alter the lapel, they would have to detatch coat from lining via the white piping (shown below) and re-shape the collar with no pattern, then reattatch the piping.

I pleaded, offering to compensate them fairly for their time, but the response: "It's not about the money. We would not forgive ourselves if we didn't do a perfect job on this coat, therefore we cannot accept."

Next stop, back to the Burberry store. They had done the initial alteration for me - shorten sleeves (as usual, they had refused to shorten the length or narrow the sleeves, because they thought the fit was fine...grr). The entire team of tailors were called down to evaluate my unusual request. "We cannot do this," Mr. Head Tailor said, "By policy we cannot alter the design of our coats. By minimizing this collar, it would no longer be Burberry." Sigh ... (insert dramatic eye roll)! I was certainly not trying to change the design. I loved the design and wanted to keep as much of it as possible, while making it proportional to my below-5 foot frame!

Needless to say I was very sad, and was ready to put this coat up for sale. But I just couldn't bear the thought of parting with it, so I took it back one more time to my personal tailors. After much hushed whispering in Korean and a thorough inspection of the coat, they must have taken pity on me ... and agreed to work on it!

End result:

Burberry Wool Cashmere Blend Coat, Sz 2 altered to fit a petite

In addition to removing 2 inches of material along the parameter of the collar, they moved the buttons over 1 inch on the belt so that it would be tighter. Very creative. One of the tailors said it took her an entire day of work ... and I couldn't be more pleased with the results!

It's unfortunate that there is no Burberry petite coats in their US retail stores. Nordstrom's online Burberry petite selection is so limited, plus a huge part of the coat buying experience is trying on different cuts and styles in person to find out what works for you.

Tried and True Tailors

So one reader asked where I take my belongings to get altered / tailored. Let me start off by saying I live in Boston where a quick google search will yield dozens of tailors to choose from within the city. Nevertheless, I make a monthly pilgrimage to Belmont, MA (ok, I exaggerate, it's only a 10 minute drive outside of the city) to my beloved Hemmingway Tailors.

This place is run by 2 Korean ladies, who have over 30 years of tailoring experience. I just love it that I can go there, try on my baggy clothes, and they will immediately start pinning away knowing exactly what needs to be done. After having precious stuff damaged by other tailors in Boston, I refuse to take my clothes anywhere other than Hemmingway (unless it's the Burb store, of course).

I've had no less than 50 pieces altered to perfection here. And as with any independently owned tailor shop, when I bring in several items at once I ask for a small discount, and they are usually happy to grant it.

Fellow petites, please feel free to share your tried and true tailor and the city in which he or she is located. I will post any shared information on the right hand side of my blog in hopes that others who live near you may find it useful.

Fall Petite Wear-to-Work - Win a $25 Neiman Marcus Gift Card

*** The update to this post can be found HERE ***

Blogging about just my own wardrobe is no fun - I want to see what other petites are wearing and buying! I happen to have a $25 NM e-gift card sitting around, which may go to waste soon if I don't use it before it expires on November 15th. So all in all, a good excuse to hold this "giveaway" :

E-mail me (PetiteAsianGirl@gmail.com) a photo of you in your favorite Fall wear-to-work outfit.

Please include a brief description of:

1. Where the outfit is from, and
2. (only if you care to share) your sizing, for reference.

Of course, to protect your identity, please feel free to use a "nickname" and crop your face out of the photo or wear sunnies : )

(If you live somewhere that NM doesn't ship to, or if you just don't enjoy shopping there, please still feel free to share your cute Fall outfit!)

I will post entries and choose a winner one week from today, on November 4th, and email her the online code for a $25 Neiman Marcus gift card. Again, it expires on 11/15/09, and NM online currently has a free shipping at ANY price promo.

Not sure yet if the winner will be chosen or randomly drawn. Although, who am I kidding? I just started this blog a week or two ago, and probably only have 1 to 2 readers! I may receive no submissions, and will have to use that GC myself : )

A different type of Crafty Work

The last couple days I've been working on a different type of crafty project - I've been working on decorating my apartment! That's right...I'm finally putting my pictures up!

This is what you see to the left when you first walk into my apartment, they aren't hung crooked, I just took a crooked picture :P My cousin painted them as a present for me!

Day one was putting up the clock and a few small pieces. Day 2 (today) was getting the big pictures put up with the help of my evil twin and brother, and a few more small pieces. Tomorrow (Day 3) I plan on doing the rest of the small pieces and working on cleaning. Then, once things are clean, I'll take a bunch of photos! I plan on doing a "virtual tour" of my apartment on my other blog (http://ajedismusings.blogspot.com) so keep your eyes peeled over there.

It's been really nice to get my pictures up! We did get a few pictures up at the last apartment, but we never did get fully settled in there. Here, we are truly settling in, and it looks like we'll be here awhile.

I have been working on my normal crafty stuff as well. I actually didn't get much sleep last night, I woke up at 4:30am for some bizarre reason, and even though I've tried, I haven't been able to nap today! So I've done some knitting (the scarf is 11 inches!), made myself a hemp bracelet (I'll show it in my next ADD post), and started on my piece for the current Etsy Bead Weavers challenge :) The only thing I haven't done is cross-stitch...and I think I'll work on that some after I'm done posting this and checking in with my teams...

Yes, I'm ADD, and an over-achiever...

What's My Deal?

Sometimes I spend far too much time thinking. I conjure up all these crazy stories in my mind and then start my "what if?" way of thinking. I honestly can't even explain it because I'm sure it makes me sound crazy. I think my problem is, I hold way too many things in. I keep things to myself and don't do anything about it, until I can't take it anymore. But seriously? Who am I going to talk to about certain things? My roommates ignore me, my best friends at home are too far away to give me a hug when I start crying about things, and I always forget that things bother me when I'm with Danny..so why bother bringing it up then? So instead, I'm sitting here and when a sad song comes on..I just cry.

I'm looking for a song to sing,
Looking for a friend to borrow.
I'm looking for my radio.
So I might find a heart to follow.

Rain, Rain, Go Away - Burberry, Part 2 - Black Trench Raincoat

The only upside to rainy days is that my water-resistant Burberry pieces get to come out and play. This brings me to my second Burberry coat: a single-breasted raincoat in size 2 with detachable hood and fleece warmer, acquired circa 2007 at a Burberry outlet store.

Looking back, the fit was so awful that I should have left it behind. But at the time, I knew that size 2 was the smallest size they make, and I was stubborn about "making" it fit. I think of this poor coat like a child whom has undergone many surgeries:

1. Burberry retail store shortened and narrowed the sleeves (barely), refused to do shoulders or the body.
2. Burberry retail store elongated the sleeves, having mis-pinned the first time and made them inches too short!
3. My tailor narrowed the shoulders by 1.5 inches each side, tapered the entire body of the coat, and slimmed sleeves a little more.

End result
(a little wrinkled from storage):

I like how there's many subtly different ways to wear this coat - hood on or off, collar up or down, with fleece warmer or without, belted or unbelted A-line style:

My coat had to undergo several stages of alterations because the tailors at the Burberry store often challenge or flat-out refuse my requests. For raincoats, they said they would not work on the shoulders, because all Burberry rainwear is dyed in one piece into water-resistant material, and any detatchment of individual pieces (like removing the arms from the shoulder) will cause damange to the water-resistancy. Another example - I wanted the sleeves slimmer but the Burberry tailor just kept scolding me repeatedly with "It's a coat, not a dress!" Ok...thank you for your opinion, but its my coat, so shouldn't I be able to decide?

As soon as I took the coat to my own tailor, she clucked her tongue at the poor fit and immediately started pinning away. She muttered in disapproval about how wide the shoulders were and how baggy the sleeves were. Sigh ... a good tailor is truly invaluable for us petites!

Tuesdays Tips #15

Wow - I haven't posted a Tuesday's Tips all month! Sorry guys! Things have been soooo busy that I haven't really had the time and energy to put into doing one of these. Which is sad, because I both enjoy putting them together and I enjoy the response I get from them!

Do you love treasuries? Do you love finding your in one? Do you love putting them together and showing off the lovely items you found? Well...if your answer was yes to any of those...do you know about Craftopolis?

Craftopolis.com is a wonderful tool for Etsy sellers. As you can see from my little screen shot there are 5 different sections. In the first, the "Treasure Hunt," you can enter your shop name and it will automatically tell you if your in a treasury or a t-west! I LOVE this feature! I used to sit down once a day and go through the pages looking for those little stars that marked that you were featured. It took too much time though, and it could be disappointing when I went a long time with out being featured. This way I can check on my shops, and it only takes a few seconds!

The "Treasury Clock" is also a great feature. It gives you a count down for both the main treasury and t-west for approximately when they will be opening. It's been awhile since I've made a treasury (too busy and I keep forgetting) but my friends who make them regularly swear by this feature.

The "Gift Guide Search" functions just like the "Treasure Hunt," only this time you can find out if your in any gift guides! I must admit I rarely remember to check this feature. I've never been in a gift guide to my knowledge and for some reason I just kinda assume I won't be! I guess with that attitude I probably won't be right?

The next section is called "Shop Lovers" and it gives you a quick and easy way to find out if your shop has been hearted recently and who by. I tend not to check this feature very often, but then again, it's been a loooong time since I kept track of my shop hearts! Since Etsy considers contacting people who've hearted you as spam, I don't really see how it does me that much good to pay too much attention. Now if I could contact them without fear of reprisal from Etsy...it would be a great networking tool!

The final tab is "Advertising." I haven't done any advertising on Craftopolis yet, but the rates seem really reasonable and I might just give it a try at some point this holiday season because it is a high traffic site! If I do, I'll make sure to let you guys know how it goes.

RANT.

I like to tell people I don’t care what other people think about me. As long as I don’t know what they are saying to other people, I really don’t care. But when you find out the truth..it hurts. A lot.

I recently found out how my best friend really feels. First lets start with this, I haven’t refered to her as my best friend in a looooong time. But whenever she IMs me it starts with HI BEST FRIEND. Don’t lie to me. I’m sick of being lied to. Don’t talk to me when you have a “good” story to tell me, and then ignore me when I have something to tell you.

Moving on.

She IMed me today to ask about wedding, proposal details, all that jazz. I had a feeling she was up to something. My feeling was confirmed when I checked with my sources. I’d like to clear things up. I AM NOT PREGNANT. Don’t ask me if your invited and then ask the other person if your obliged to go. Fact is, you weren’t even on my “maybe” list. Don’t make fun of me for not driving, and then when I tell you my plans, don’t call me spoiled for BUYING my mothers car. And PLEASE don’t talk shit about Danny being in the Marines? What do you do for work…oh that’s right, you enter data for the college you went to in order to pay off your loans. And you know what? I do have GOALS and ASPIRATIONS. You don’t know shit about me and you haven’t for a LONG time.

Endrant.

Crafty ADD Update #14

What a week! Last week was a whirl wind of crocheting and making jewelry to put in my consignment stores. It's a relief to be done with the blanket! I already showed it once, but since this is my ADD post I'll show it one last time :)

Crochet

I wrote a post about my crocheting marathon already - but I do have something to add! Every one loved it at the party. The best part was little two year old Billy's reaction to it though. "It has holes in it!" Fe's response? "That's so we can find the baby!"

It'll be a little while before you see any more crocheting projects from me. I decided to toss my original blanket I was working on. There were WaY to many mistakes in it! So I'm chalking it up to a learning experience and I'll use the remaining yarn for small projects. For now I'm going to do some knitting though :) Once I'm done with the two knitting projects I have lined up though ...

Knitting

I had started this scarf once, as I was waiting to start the baby blanket, but I had to pull it apart and start again cuz I made some mistakes and I don't really know how to fix it other than to tear it all out! But hey, in the last couple days I've managed to knit it back to approximately where it was before, so I'm not worried about it!

Cross Stitch

I started filling in the brain! This was the first project I picked up again after finishing the blanket...and then I haven't picked it up since. Yesterday was mostly lost to crafting or I'd probably have more done on it. It's fun to add in the color!

Jewelry

I'm working on (among other things) making a series of bead woven earrings to put in my main consignment shop. This is the first half of the first pair! I made it this morning and I'm hoping to have enough time to make the second one before I have to leave to run errands and get my tooth pulled this afternoon. We'll see. I also have to fold the laundry when it's done and take a shower once I have clean clothes...

Showing off Bead Work...

...And not just mine! But we'll get to that in a moment :)

I've been planning since last mont to make a special piece just for breast cancer awareness. I even got started on it at the beginning of the month! Then I ran out of beads... BUT I've finally finished it!

I have a new bust for my necklaces! Now I just need to work on a real light box so I can get brighter and better pictures...

Anyway, this necklace can be found both on Etsy and on Artfire and will be dedicated permenantly to Breast Cancer Awareness. This will be the only item in my shop left dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness after the month is over. 50% of it's sale will go to the Susan G. Komen fund.

Now to show off my friends! Christina of Good Quill Hunting put together an incredible You Tube video of the members of our Bead Weaving Team. It's long - but worth watching!

A Little Tease!

Anna sent us six pictures after our engagement shoot. This one is my favorite! I can't wait until she sends us the rest! We had SUCH a good time doing them! She said that Danny has been the only guy to give suggestions on how he wants pictures taken..and that she thinks we are SUCH a cute couple. She is willing to fly to Boston to take our wedding pictures! We'll see how the rest of the pictures come out and then we'll decide! This is so exciting!

Theory Petite-Friendly Items & My New Suit

For my job interviews a few years back, I had just one sad pant suit from Banana Republic. But this was before they had expanded their sizing to offer more options for petite women in 00p and XXS. My suit was a 0p (smallest size I could find) and I pretty much swam in it. The suit was already expensive for my college budget, so it never crossed my mind to spend even more to alter a mediocre pant suit. Ended up selling this to a fellow petite after just 2 wears.

A year later I was no better off, with one H&M skirt suit lined up for the first week of work. The suit was cheap, and I spent more on alterations than the suit itself. I had it tailored relentlessly (shoulders, sleeves, waist, length) from a baggy size 4 to fit my small frame. I don't believe H&M makes suiting in size 2, which is fine I guess, because who wants to wear H&M suits anyways if they can fit into better stuff?

The weekend before I started work, I stumbled upon a Theory outlet store, which, looking back, was pretty much a life-changing event! The prices were eye-bulging for my fresh-out-of-school self, even though everything at the outlet was a good bit below retail. But the stuff was gorgeous ... tailored wool suit separates, beautifully dyed silk blouses, soft cashmere sweaters, dresses in contemporary silhouettes. I had to have it. Some current picks from Bloomies:

Not everything is suitable for tiny petite frames, though, but here are some things that work for me:

1. Theory slim / "skinny" work pants in 00. I am obsessed with these because they elongate short legs unlike flared or boot cut pants. Also, I can wear them with flats without ruining the bottoms. For boot cut pants, however, Mark B is the smallest cut of Theory pants I've found.

2. Theory stretch dresses in 0. 0 is the smallest size they make in dresses, and the ones in stretch fabric usually run quite small.

3. Theory classic blazers in 00. I own Gabe B, Branden, and Hayward, and only had to have sleeves shortened on each.

4. Theory knits and sweaters in size TP. I'm guessing this stands for tres petite? No idea. Size "P" is almost always too big.

I plan on posting my favorites from each of the above categories in the near future, but today's post is dedicated to my most recent find: a classic Theory tweed dress suit!

While shopping at Saks Off 5th last month, I discovered this lone jacket hanging on a rack. I was enamored by the fabric, "Dialogue," a fine-textured black tweed with specs of metallic silver. It was a cropped style in a size 00. The jacket fit great pretty much everywhere, with 1 problem - the bottom flared out, making me look pregnant and stout. It even looks bad on the model below!

I wasn't sure if this could be altered without ruining the overall shape of the jacket. But as I was pacing around the store debating, I stumbled upon the matching dress and my heart nearly stopped... it was a stretchy fabric shift dress in size 0! The petite clothing gods had bestowed upon me a perfectly coordinated, tiny Theory tweed dress suit at almost 70% off retail, and there was no way I was passing this up.

Thankfully, my tailor did a great job tapering that flared bottom:

The dress on the other hand fit like a glove right off the rack. I just got the hem shortened (in retrospect I may have gotten this an inch too short, but that can be undone). Post-alterations:

In person, the fabric is gorgeous! These pics don't do it justice:

Then a way to use up that Thanksgiving turkey for dinner? Turkey Potpie with Cheddar Biscuit Crust

Don't forget a show stopper dessert courtesy of one of my favorite non-bead/jewelry magazines, Real Simple. Gingersnap Pear Cheesecake (one small suggestion from my experience with this recipe is to reduce the amount of butter used in the crust).
