What a Bitch.

Seriously, Mother Nature has been a huge bitch lately. And it hit close to home yesterday. Of course, I'm not in North Carolina right now...but I have family and friends there so of course I was desperately trying to get in touch with everyone last night!

First, my wedding photographer lives in Sanford. Those were the first reports I heard about. I finally heard back from her this morning. They still have no power. The damage is horrifying.

Lowes in Sanford, NC

I turned on the news and started to hear reports about Raleigh...my in-laws live the next town over! So, I tried getting in touch with anyone with a phone. It took a while to get back to me...because they are on vacation! Thank goodness! Three houses next to my father-in-laws brothers house was destroyed. Looking at pictures is crazy for me...I know where all of these places are!

When I went to bed Jacksonville was still under a warning...but when I woke up my Facebook was taken over by pictures of damage and friends saying they are okay. Home have been destroyed on base and businesses are no longer standing. All my friends are accounted for, thank God. These are pictures off of Facebook from my friends....

As much as I'm missing home and husband I'm very happy I wasn't in NC for this...I would have been freaking out. I'm thinking of all my friends and family in North Carolina today, Ft. Bragg was hit bad too. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.

Adding info to the Blog

So far all my blog posts have been real ramblings about things going on with my business. I am now going to try and add some jewellery information and hints and tips too.

One thing that I really hate doing is cleaning silver, so why not try and prevent having to spend valuable time carrying out this tedious task in the first place.

So what is tarnish?

Well it is a thin layer of corrosion that can appear on metals making it look dull in colour.
It occurs from various airborne chemicals, which will speed up the tarnishing process if jewellery is left  out in the open.
So what can we do to prevent it?

1. Grip Seal Bags
Always store your jewellery in an air tight bag to try and prevent any airborne chemicals getting to your pretties.

2. Silver Tarnish Cloth
You can wrap your pieces in one of these cloths to keep them out of direct contact with the air.

3. Anti Tarnish Strips
These are tiny little black strips which can be bought and placed in your jewellery box or displays to help keep them glistening.

4. Acid Free Tissue Paper
Store your jewellery in white acid free tissue paper in your jewellery box, this will not only prevent it from scratches against your other items but also keep it out of the air.

5. Quick Wipe Over
After wearing your jewellery always give it a quick wipe over before placing it back in its box, this will remove any oils that have come from your skin.

6. Apply perfume before jewellery
Always make sure that you put your perfume on long before your jewellery as this can speed up tarnishing.

EtsyBloggers: April Blog Carnival - Library Memories

The April topics to write on are about our library and reading. The specific question: "What fond memories do you have of your public library and reading?"  I'm a big reader. I always have a book stashed in the car, a bag, wherever. Right now I'm reading Suze Orman's latest book, the Money Class.

We did monthly trips to the library as a child during the summer. The infamous reading lists to fill out and then get a book prize once the list was complete, it was time to go back to the library. I remember and still have a few of those free books we received. The one I remember is the Popcorn Book. It was this funny book that took you through the process of a kernel becoming popcorn.  Why I liked it so much, I can't say now. But I just loved it.  I checked out many dinosaur books, biographies, and a little bit of fiction.  Now I read way more fiction. I must have got all the science and history out of my system. I would venture to say, all the trips to the library made me the reader I am today.

My Favorite Kind of Lace - Beaded!

Sorry I've been AWOL this week - I got eaten by the migraine monsters! Oh dear... But I'm back and at 'em today! I've even spent most of my day beading, but more about that later.

I got this wonderful picture today:

That's my dear friend Veet - and she was the winner of my giveaway this month! Can you see what she's wearing? Yes? That's the necklace she won! She said she loves it (yes, I live for affirmation!) and that it goes amazingly well with her McDonals uniform which amuses me to no end.

The design for this necklace is actually one of my favorite designs. It's done using a beading technique called "Antique Lace." I learned it from a book that a friend gave me before I ever opened up shop, and I've made quite a few necklaces using it!

I like this pattern because it looks like lace, but it's very modern! It makes a great choker, or you can wear it longer and twisted. I tend to stick to the chokers though. One of these days I really should make some bracelets with it....

Just to tell you how much I love this pattern, not only have I sold several of these, but I have one I wear (in black, purple, and silver), my Mom has two (one in blues, one in red), and my mother in law has one that matches the one I sent Veet! Whew. Wait...that means I need to make one for my sister in law...

When I was putting the necklace up for the giveaway I realized it had been awhile since I made one of these so guess what I'm working on right now? I'll show it to you next week :)

Loving Now: Vibrant Jewels

For the accessories-challenged dresser, vibrant jewels are an easy way to spiff up a basic ensemble. Unfortunately, good yet affordable ones are hard to find. My main problems with costume jewelry are cheap metals that rust and oxidize (I was told to store metal jewelry in individual ziploc bags), and jewels that fall out of their settings.

The foundation for this work outfit is a little girls' white tee, and plain trousers.

Turquoise Montauk Necklace & Westhampton Earrings courtesy of Amrita Singh

I'm sure many of you are familiar with Amrita Singh jewelry. Her "Hamptons" collection is exactly what I was looking for, full chunky pieces that come in at least 6 or 7 vibrant colors. The pieces are 18k gold-plated brass with "jewels" made of lightweight resin stones.

You can see more colorful Amrita Singh pieces on fellow bloggers: coral necklace on Cee, black necklace and ring on Jen, emerald necklace and ring on Vicky, coral bracelet on Sydney, turquoise necklace on April, and more.amrita5
Coral rings from left to right: YSL Arty, Topshop, F21
One thing to note is Amrita Singh earrings come in either post or clip-on backings, depending on the style. I really liked this style earring and thought I could make the clips work, but they were not comfortable on my pierced ears. I'm going to buy some post backings and try to DIY-convert these.

The color of these pieces are so vibrant. I can't wait to pick up some "emerald" items next. Retail prices are more that what I would typically pay for costume jewelry, but you can get 20% off w/ extrapetite or wait for the items to go to sample sale sites like Hautelook (invite link).

Readers - Do you own any Amrita Singh pieces? If so, please share the style name and your thoughts.

Winner and Your Color IQ...

Congrats to Viki who FINALLY was able to correctly guess the plan for my giant stash of fabric...a duvet cover! This French Lagoon button is on its way to her.... I'm sure it would have helped your guesses if I would have told you that there's 12 yards of the fabric (math error...should have only bought 6 yards but I wanted to make it reversible and listened to the fabric store employee who cut 6 yards of each fabric rather than 3 of each). Needless to say, there will be accent pillows happening as well!

Thank you so much to everyone who commented with their opinion on glazed vs unglazed button backs...You definitely reinforced my usual button/pendant back glazing habits so I will continue to do so (even though it can be quite a bugger at times). There were 20 different commenters for the giveaway so courtesy of random.org here is the winner....drum roll please....

#9 which belongs to Michelle Mach! Congrats Michelle!! I'll send you an email today so we can figure out what you'd like to claim for your prize!

I leave you with a fun little task for the weekend...
Check out the Color IQ test, where you organize color chips by hue to determine how accurately you perceive slight color differences. If you miss any it gives you a breakdown of the areas where you have more difficulty discriminating between the hues. Not that I'm competitive or anything (cough, cough) but I did happen to get a perfect score :) The hubster scored 15. Try it and let me know how you did!

My Thoughts Recently...

I'm ready for this training to be over. I miss my husband, my bed, my pillow, my home...my dog sleeping past 4:30AM. Yes, ever since we have been in Massachusetts Miley has felt the need to wake up and see my Dad off to work.

I have a few more weeks in Massachusetts with nothing planned. Literally, nothing. Everyone who said they wanted to hangout while I was home has stopped trying to make plans. And if they have made plans...they cancel last minute. It's seriously frustrating. I love being here and spending time with the family...but I can not wait to be back in Jacksonville!

Once we get both get back we have lots of plans. Big plans, small plans, travel plans. Oh, I love plans!

We've had our tax money back for a while but haven't spent a penny of it (which came in handy with the almost-government-shutdown) so our first step is to spruce up the apartment! Screen for the backdoor, picnic table, ottoman for the living room and probably a few more things thrown in! The rest will go into savings.

Me and Danny made a deal: he quits smoking and I'll get my license. About time, huh?

We'll have Kaleb for a month (atleast I'm hoping he gets to come down....) Last year we did so much but this year I want to keep things local. I'm crossing my fingers we'll get to bring him to Maine for the 4th of July!

After that we want to start our One Tank Trips again. I need suggestions! So far we're going to Asheville. Where else should we go?! I love summer so much...I could go on and on about the things I'm excited for!

We're hoping to make it to the local beer and wine festivals in the fall. Then we have Reina and Dave's wedding (aka blogger convention!) Then I might be making my way back up to MA for Veronica's bridal and bachellorette stuff. Seriously, I'm a busy girl!

And in between all that we have some pretty big plans for ourselves. If you stalk conversations between me and Bonnie (The "Sometimes Single" Mom) you know my obsession with her gorgeous children. Or if you've seen pictures of me hanging out with Lauren...it might be clear what kind of plans we have. Who knew that I would actually get this fever.

Sooo...with all that being said, I seriously can not wait for my hubby to be home!

Ann Taylor Petites and H&M Conscious Collection Reviews

**4/15 Update**
I went back to H&M today specifically to find this little peplum top. It was my instant favorite from the price list for wearing on hot summer days, and quite affordable at $12.95. It reminds me of my well-loved TopShop floral tee, except that was an overpriced $40. Good news: I found a sz 2 in a pretty floral print, versus plain white. Bad news: it's tagged at $18. I'm going to contact customer service about the price discrepancy.
While there, I also stumbled upon this safari-esque orange & cream circle skirt for a mere $9.95. I've been looking for bright, easy-to-wear skirts for summer that aren't too short (the winds are gusty here in Boston!). XS was sold out so I took home an S. It's 100% cotton so it will hopefully shrink.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As detailed in my previous post, the Ann Taylor family of stores is having an epic 40% off your entire purchase (regular & sale items) promo from today until Sunday. No coupon needed in-stores. I popped into my local store and there were so many cute finds to be had. Even with 40% off though, items were still pricey, so I limited my purchase today to favorites only.

1. Knit Jersey Striped Crossover Dress in XXSP, $88 retail & Citrine Belt in XS
This is pretty much gone online, but it's worth hunting down in-stores. I believe there's free shipping for AT cardholders. This navy and white dress was love as soon as I put it on. The knit material grazes my figure nicely but is not snug (aka no dreaded "S" shape at the tummy & tush). The faux-wrap V neckline is perfect and I love the side gathered pleats.

I've been eying this belt since AT touted "citrine" as one of their hot summer colors. It's similar to my beloved yellow cardigans, but with a slightly neon zing. Verdict: Bought both at 40% off, plus a $15 coupon ; )
Does the right-side pic look familiar? Teehee : )

This has the potential to be a classic tweed sheath dress, but the neckline was gappy for me and the entire torso and hips were too roomy. Verdict: Pass. Recommended for those a bit bigger than me.
This dress was so darling, and I especially liked the bow tie which cinched the waist in (sorry, hard to see in these photos). The material is mostly cotton, which I don't like for dresses as much as drapier fabrics. Verdict: Passed. Still too pricey after 40% off discount, and I had already found a navy/white dress.
I already have a beloved chambray shirt, but I've been curious to try this one nonetheless. It's basically the typical chambray shirt, but more structured, tailored, and refined, and it's very nice. It's cut slimmer than the Target sz XS one I have, but also pricier. I'm happy with mine, but if I didn't have one already I'd snatch this up.

As for the skirt, I've tried it on previously yet I keep reaching for it because I love the neutral color and speckly texture. As with all AT pencil skirts, fit is a lil' big on someone my size without alterations, but I love all my AT pencil skirts for work, and believe they are worth the alterations.
This shell looked slim-cut on the hanger, and sure enough it fits tiny. It's a stretchy material, and was a snug fit on my torso. The armholes and neck hole were both small. I like the generous ruffle detail down the front side, but from the side view it's a bit bulky looking. Verdict: Pass. Liked the fit and cut, but didn't love the print or price.
Last but not least, I saw my friend try on the Bateau Lace Dress (regular sizing only) and did a double take. The material and crochet pattern is completely identical to the lace items out at the Factory stores now. Material content says it's slightly different, but I inspected it carefully and could swear it's the same. Price is also exactly the same ($198). The only thing different is the neckline, and I like the Factory version better, hands down! I'm curious why they brought it back to both regular and Factory stores, at the same price nonetheless.

Next up, as many of you already know, H&M's environmentally "Conscious" collection hit stores today. Being the dork that I am, I printed out the price list and circulated the store like a hawk looking for highlighted pieces. I was so engrossed in my hunt that I ran smack into a low-hanging sign and almost gave myself a concussion.

1. Scalloped High-Waisted Shorts sz 2, approx $18 retail. I've tried on a number of similar frilly scalloped items this season and most looked ridiculous. This didn't look too ridiculous, and the waist actually fit small. Material is flimsy and probably sheer, though. Verdict: Purchased w/ 20% off.
2. White Denim Sheath Dress sz 2, approx $30. This isn't part of the Conscious collection but it was hanging together. I really like white for summer, but it has to be done right. The torso fit slim, but the neckline was low and gappy on me, and you can see all the seams right through the fabric making it look a bit hoe-y. Verdict: Pass
3. Assorted Boyfriend Blazers sz 2, approx $50 each. I was extremely disappointed with all these blazers. They were roomy, and overpriced in my opinion for H&M. The middle one was a huge hopeful for me after seeing the photos, but it looked very cheap in person. Verdicts: PASS.
4. Linen Boyfriend Blazer sz 2, approximately $40 retail. I'm kind of determined to find a longer casual blazer to wear over short dresses and skirts. This was better than the above in material, structure, and price. Wonder if I can fry it in the dryer without it shrinking funny because it's lined in a poly material.  Verdict: Put on hold. It also comes in a light pink.
5. Eyelet Shorts sz 2. Price...forget? I was disappointed that most shorts (except for the scalloped ones) in this collection ran quite big for H&M. These would be cute as sultry little shorts, but instead looked like a diaper on me. Verdict: Pass.
6. Last but not least, what I personally thought was one of the prettiest pieces in the collection: Scalloped bubble dress, sz 2, $50. This has a brocade skirt and lighter top, which is a lovely combo in person. As you can see, however, the neckline is WAY too sexy for this girl. The "V" goes all the way down to the waist w/ no crossover. For something this revealing, my girls would need a trusty push-up bra versus flat little pasties. Verdict: Pass.
My local store only got one shipment, so more items will be trickling in this week. I'll be back to scope out some more pieces I had my eye on. Overall today, the damage was $61 at Ann Taylor and $14.40 at H&M. Not too shabby for pieces I really like.
